Pregnant woman killed in police confrontation - another woman injured
A large crowd has now converged on the Yallahs square in St Thomas after the police on Saturday afternoon reportedly shot two sisters one of whom has been confirmed dead.
The dead woman who was 25 years old was also reported to be pregnant.
A heavy detachment of police personnel is now on the scene.
The incident happened shortly before 5pm in close proximity to the Yallahs Police Station. It's reported that the pregnant woman was sitting in the square when a friend went over to have a conversation with her during which expletives were heard.
A policeman who was standing nearby and in the process of writing a traffic ticket for a motorist, reportedly overheard the woman using the expletives and threatened to arrest her. The policeman reportedly grabbed onto the woman and began to pull her to the nearby police station.
It's alleged that a struggle ensued and the woman fell to the ground. She managed to get back on her feet and her sister ran to her rescue.
The policeman then reportedly opened fire and shot both women.
The 25 year old woman died on the spot while her wounded sister was taken to hospital.
Angry residents have resorted to blocking the main thoroughfare.
