New local tomato paste

09:15am | Mon, April 09, 2012

State Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Ian Hayles says a new local tomato paste is to be introduced to the market soon.
This as the Government moves to decrease the level of imports of the commodity.
According to Mr. Hayles the new tomato paste is as a result of the successful testing of at least four different types of local tomatoes
In the meantime, Mr. Hayles said that as part of efforts to increase the supply of value-added Jamaican products, an additional 150 acres of ginger are being cultivated this year.
From this, he said that 210 metric tonnes more of dried ginger should be produced in 2013 to satisfy the existing orders and increase national supply by 43 per cent or 696 metric tonnes.
Jamaican ginger is known for its world class flavour.
