Gov't mum on TAJ digicel raid

01:01pm | Wed, May 09, 2012

The government has declined to comment on the likely international implications for the country of a raid by Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) on Digicel's New Kingston offices on Friday.

Representatives of the TAJ accompanied by police personnel went to the telecommunication company's offices to execute a search warrant.  However, the TAJ has been criticised for heavy handed tactics on one of Jamaica's popular international investors.  Speaking during the Jamaica House media briefing this morning, Information Minister, Sandrea Falconer would only say that investigations are being carried out on the use of force allegations by the Commissioner of Police.

The TAJ in response to the complaints has said that its operation at Digicel’s offices was to ensure that GCT paid by customers was paid over in full to the tax authorities.
